New Hungarian Golden Visa program announced for Investors

Today, the Hungarian government has published plans to introduce a new golden visa option for investors (known in Hungarian as “guest investor residence permit”), making this the latest and most attractive investment residency program in the EU.

What to expect from Europe’s latest golden visa program for investors?

Investors can choose from the following options:

  • EUR 250,000:  purchase of bonds issued by a real estate fund registered by the Hungarian National Bank (MNB)
  • EUR 500,000:  purchase of Hungarian residential real estate
  • EUR 1 million: donation to a designated educational or cultural institution

Either type of investment will grant the investor and their family residency in Hungary for 10 years, with no minimum stay requirement.

What are the unique benefits of getting Hungarian residency through investment?

The guest investor residence permit may remain valid for up to 10 years, in contrast with other residency types where the permit is normally granted for 1, 2, or 3 years. As an additional bonus, family members who base their application on the same investment also receive residency for 10 years.

While extension of Hungarian residency normally requires that the applicant spends most of their time in Hungary, this condition does not apply to guest investors, they remain eligible for the extension of their residency as long as they maintain their investment.

The recently published proposal for investment residency will make Hungary an even more attractive destination for investors interested in EU residency and visa-free travel to the Schengen countries and many more.
